Help Newly Arriving Afghan Refugees –

Northbrook UMC and GUMC are partnering to help with the huge influx of Afghan Refugees arriving in Chicago to get settled in their new home and country.  We have been assigned 4 Afghan men.  All worked in some capacity with the U.S. Military or U.S. Embassy. They have been provided furnished studio apartments in the same building in Rogers Park through the resettlement agency which they have for 90 days.  The following is a report from Sharon Noah from Northbrook UMC who, along with one other member, visited the four men 11/14/21.
“The men were able to get household items and other essentials at the free community refugee store so are positioned fairly well. They will begin English classes this week along with receiving job assistance.
They were so appreciative of their welcome to the US and for all the support and kind donations they have received.
What they still would really appreciate are the following:
4 men’s bikes; three with frame sizes either 15″-16″ or 16″-17″ (three men are about 5’6″-5’8″) and one 17″-19″ frame (one is about 6′) along with helmets and locks.
4 TV’s
4 computers, ideally laptops but could be desktops; ideally one an Apple; new enough to be able to run current software.
1 beard trimmer
If you have any of these items that you’d like to donate, please let me or Ethel know.
Keep these men in your prayers as they work hard to learn English, look for work and get settled into their new home in Chicago.”
We are looking for volunteers to help get things delivered to the men, take them shopping, or as needed.  We would like to build a pool of volunteers to call on as needed.
